Kootenay Co-Op secures new home for 2012

The Kootenay Country Store Cooperative recently announced to its membership that it will not be paying out patronage returns this year in an effort to save money for the store’s upcoming move into the building that now houses Extra Foods.

Kootenay Co-Op manager, Deirdrie Lang said the store has grown to the point where it needs to expand into a bigger space, and the Extra Foods building at the opposite end of Baker Street has long been seen as a great location.

Kootenay Co-ops Rise to Carbon Challenge

full text>>British Columbia Co-operative Association
Co-ops in the News - June 16, 2008 - All Day
As part of the nation-wide Commuter Challenge - Nelson & District Credit Union challenged other local cooperatives to determine which organization could leave a lighter commuter carbon foot-print from June 1st-7th. A grading system of walking, cycling, teleconferencing, public transit, car-pooling and driving solo was used.

The local co-operative in Nelson which accepted the credit union's challenge was the Kootenay Co-op Country Store. Bragging rights for the winning team and $200 being paid by the losing team to the West Kootenay Eco-Society was laid down.

A brief history of the Kootenay Country Store Co-operative 1975 - 2001

Case Study © British Columbia Institute for Co-operative Studies & Kootenay Country Store Co-operative
"In the early 1970’s British Columbia experienced a province-wide grass roots effort to decentralise the food supply and improve access to affordable high quality whole foods and staple household items. The buying clubs that emerged in both rural and urban locations around the province cut out the middleman and made use of unconventional food sources. Club members teamed up to purchase large bulk orders from a number of co-operative wholesalers in the lower mainland. The Kootenay Country Store Co-operative formed in 1975 as a product of buying clubs that had emerged in the Slocan Valley."

kootenay coop staff blog - all welcome

hi, here is a place for kootenay coop staff to post photos, vacation journals, want ads, prose, poetry, gigs, promos, parties, shenanigans, services, recipes, knitting patterns, kudos and other items of interest. any of the staff can co-edit: if your email is on the co-op staff page then an invitation has probably been sent, if not just ask for a Blogger invite and then sign up with a user name and password. all staff members can post, anyone can comment, and a few that want to be administrators can help with blog formatting, comment moderation and invitations to others to join in.

this blog grew out of a chat with Carolyn about the photos we both took today of our classy staff. she showed me some amazing pictures she had taken and I asked about sharing them via a blog that you could all access. after mentioning getting a blog started and how it takes no software other than Blogger's default editing tools and maybe some basic html, well, this is the result...

a blogging basics class can be set up anytime, or even a bit of one-on-one if wanted. you will pick it up quickly and be blogging away in minutes - just contact d@ve if you want an invite or need a bit of direction.
